Is Shanks a friend or foe? Or is he an enemy? Hostility to the World Government

Hello! I am KENTA, a Japanese who loves One Piece.
The “Red-Haired” Shanks are the ones we would like to focus on this time.
In the movie version of “Film Red,” Shanks rescued Uta with the Straw Hat crew.

In this picture, too, Shanks seems to be an ally who leads Luffy to One Piece.
At this point, however, it is not clear whether Shanks stands on the “World Government side” or the “pirate side.

First of all, let me tell you what I think.
I assume that “Shanks, although born a World Noble, has strong hostile intentions toward the World Nobles and the World Government.
Let’s take a closer look.

Relationship between Shanks and the World Government

At this point, it is not clear whether Shanks stands on the World Government side or the pirate side.
However, the following three points suggest that “Shanks has hostile intentions toward the World Government.
The following is a step-by-step explanation.

1. Shanks’ background

Looking at Shanks’ background so far, I think it is highly likely that he was actually born a Tenryujin and raised as a pirate.
In the movie version “FILM RED,” it was suggested that Shanks is of the “Figurand” family, which belongs to a high rank among the Tenryujin.

Shanks was picked up by Roger’s pirates when he was one year old.
Shanks was among the treasures taken by Roger and his men during the “God Valley Incident” in the past.

Later, after becoming the Fourth Emperor, Shanks continued to contact and converse with the Five Elders.

FIVE ELDERS: “This is the World Congress, and in your position you should not be involved in politics. I took the time because it’s you.”
Shanks: “Thank you. I need to talk to you about a certain pirate.”

As you can see from this description, there is some connection between Shanks and the FIVE ELDERS, and also from the presence of the Figurand family, which was depicted in the film film red, Shanks is almost certainly a Tenryujin.
This makes many people wonder if Shanks is not on the World Government side.

However, as explained earlier, Shanks was picked up by Roger at the age of one in God Valley, and has spent most of his life as a pirate.
Perhaps Shanks is trying to win the trust of the World Government by superficially creating a cooperative relationship with them, with the advantage of being able to hide his intentions and facilitate his scheming.

2. Robbery of only rubber band

From Gorobun’s statement in episode 1044, it was revealed that the Gomugomu no Mi is “Hitohito no Mi Model Genjutsu Kind Nika”.

FIVE ELDERS: “Gomu Gomu no Nika has always been tried to be recovered by the world government, but it was never settled in its collection, for 800 years.”

From these words of Gorobei, we know that it is “the devil’s fruit that the government has been searching for 800 years.”
And 13 years ago, the world government had finally succeeded in obtaining it.

But then came the red-haired Shanks.

The Red-Haired Pirates robbed a ship that CP9 was escorting 13 years ago of only “Gomu Gomu no Nama no Nama” (Rubber Fruit).
Perhaps Shanks knew that the true identity of the “Gomu Gomu no Mi” was the “Hitohito no Mi model Nika.
And as I explained earlier, Shanks is most likely a Tenryujin and a collaborator of the world government, so he must know that the government has been pursuing the “Hitohito no Mi” for 800 years.
Knowing this background, he is robbing the “Gomu Gomu no Mi” and his actions clearly show his intention to oppose the World Government.

3. Saving Luffy’s life

This is a famous scene in the first episode, the beginning of the story.

Shanks: “It’s a cheap shot, I’m glad at least one of my arms is safe.”

Shanks even lost one arm to save Luffy.
If Shanks were a Tenryujin and on the side of the World Government, he would not rescue a boy who ate a rubber-rubber fruit and then try to get him to become a pirate.
Rather, since it is said that the devil’s fruit regenerates itself somewhere in the world when a person with the ability dies, it would have been possible for him not to dare to save Luffy, thereby putting his rubbery body back in his hands.
However, since Shanks is saving Luffy, we can still assume that Shanks is willing to oppose the World Government.

From the above three points, it is thought that Shanks is building a superficial cooperative relationship with the World Government in order to make it easier to advance the conspiracy, even though he has a strong intention to be hostile to the World Government.

Reasons why Shanks resents the World Government

From here, we will consider the reason why Shanks resents the World Government despite his birth as a Tenryujin.

Shanks’ Tears

As depicted in the Oden Journal in episode 968, Shanks as a child asked Roger some questions after he returned from Raftel and learned everything about the world, and then cried.

Given this situation, it is natural to expect that Shanks shed tears when Roger told him something about the secret of the world.
Also, as we have seen in Shanks’ upbringing, Shanks is of the Figurand family, so we can infer that he heard something about the Figurand family from Roger and shed tears.
And a hint of what it is all about can be found in Episode 823.
It is this statement that Cobra, the King of Alabaster, on his way to the Reverie Conference, heard from the World Government.

Cobra: “I would like to know, oh my God, what did the Nefertari kings do to the world in those days?”

The Nefertari were 20 of the first royal families involved in the establishment of the World Government, who qualified to become World Nobles but remained in the lower world.
In other words, what the Nefertari family did to the world can be seen as what the other 19 kingdoms that became the Tenryujin did to the world.

In addition, if they did not become World Nobles because of their actions, then what the 20 royal families, including the Nefertari and Figuerand families, did to the world could be considered inhumane.
The Tenryujin, who currently rule the world, have enslaved ordinary people and caused many others to suffer.

If the 20 royal families were acting inhumanely to rule the world, Shanks would have wept when he heard from Roger that one of the royal families that was responsible for the current system of rule, from which many people suffer, is the Figurand family. I think he shed tears when he heard from Roger that the Figgerlands were one of the royal families that were responsible for the current system of rule.

Words from Shanks’ daughter, Uta

Uta, Shanks’ daughter, depicted in the film red, made this statement to the Tenryujin.

Uta: “World Nobles are the most hated people in the world who want to enslave everyone, saying they are the rulers of the world.”

Uta’s statement shows that in the world of One Piece, World Nobles are the most hated people in the world.
In other words, he is likely to see what his own family, the Tenryu people, do and how people think of them as they travel around the world.
What is recalled here is how Luffy’s older brother, Sabo, became a pirate.

Sabo was born a nobleman, and when Sabo learned about the incident at the Grey Terminal, he said, “I am ashamed to be born a nobleman.” And so he became a pirate because he was ashamed of being born a noble.
If Shanks heard the secret of the Figurand system from Roger and saw the deeds of the Tenryujin around the world, it would not be surprising if he, like Sabo, is ashamed of his blood and considers overthrowing the World Nobles.

In this issue, we have introduced the evidence that “Shanks has strong hostile intentions toward the World Nobles and the World Government.
Shanks is still a mystery. The truth will be revealed little by little from now on.
I am very much looking forward to the final chapter.
